When we say a website is invisible to AI recommendation engines, we don't mean it's completely missing from the internet. We mean that when an AI system goes looking for an expert to recommend, it cannot read, parse, or confidently cite your site. So it reaches past you to whoever it can read clearly.

AI engines like ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Claude work by crawling the web (or drawing from training data gathered by crawlers) and then synthesizing what they find. The crawlers. GPTBot for OpenAI, Claude-Web for Anthropic, PerplexityBot for Perplexity. Request your webpage the same way a browser does, but they stop there. They do not execute JavaScript. They do not wait for content to load. They read the HTML source exactly as the server delivers it.[1]

They operate on the assumption that meaningful content will be in the raw HTML, and they move on if it isn't.

The practical test is simple: open any page on your website, right-click, and select "View Page Source." Do not use the developer tools inspector. That shows you the rendered DOM after JavaScript has run. The source view shows you exactly what a crawler sees. If your headlines, your body copy, and your schema markup don't appear there in plain text, they are invisible to AI.
